When I first came to the US as an F-1 student in 2016, one of the most frustrating things was trying to get a credit card. Every application asked for a Social Security Number — which I didn’t have. No job, no SSN. No SSN, no credit card. No credit card, no credit history. A classic catch-22.
I ended up walking into a Bank of America branch with my passport and I-20, and they approved me for a student card on the spot. That one decision started my entire credit journey. Years later I have an 800+ credit score.
SSN vs. ITIN — What’s the Difference?
SSN: Only available if you have authorized employment — on-campus job, CPT, or OPT. New arrivals with no job don’t have one.
ITIN: Apply via IRS Form W-7. Takes 7–11 weeks to process. Some cards accept ITIN instead of SSN.
No SSN/ITIN needed: A few banks let you apply with just passport + I-20 if you visit a branch in person. These are your best options on day one.
Tier 1: No SSN or ITIN Required
Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards (Student)
| Annual fee | $0 |
|---|---|
| Rewards | 3% on chosen category · 2% grocery & wholesale · 1% everything else (6% year 1) |
| SSN required? | No — apply in-person at a branch |
| What to bring | Passport + I-20 + proof of address |
| Foreign transaction fee | 3% |
This is the card I personally started with. The 3% cashback is the best reward rate on a no-annual-fee student card. The key: BofA lets you apply in-person without an SSN — just walk into a branch near your campus. Many international students don’t know this is possible.
Deserve® EDU Mastercard
| Annual fee | $0 |
|---|---|
| Rewards | 1% cashback on all purchases |
| Bonus perk | Free year of Amazon Prime Student |
| SSN required? | No — apply online with passport + student visa |
| Foreign transaction fee | $0 |
Designed specifically for international students. Apply entirely online — no branch visit needed. Lower cashback than BofA but the $0 foreign transaction fee and free Amazon Prime Student make it worthwhile, especially if you shop on Amazon a lot.
Zolve Credit Card
| Annual fee | $0 (all tiers) |
|---|---|
| Rewards | Classic: 1% · Signature: up to 3% · Black: up to 5% |
| SSN required? | No — apply online |
| Foreign transaction fee | $0 |
Fintech company specifically targeting international students and immigrants. The Black tier (up to 5% on 5 brands of your choice) sounds impressive, but Zolve is newer and doesn’t have the branch network of bigger banks. The $0 foreign transaction fee is a genuine plus.
Tier 2: ITIN Accepted (No SSN, But Need ITIN)
These cards don’t require an SSN but you’ll need an ITIN — apply via IRS Form W-7, takes 7–11 weeks. More established banks with better long-term ecosystems.
| Card | Annual fee | Rewards | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capital One Quicksilver Student | $0 | 1.5% flat on everything | Simplicity, flat rate |
| Discover it® Student | $0 | 5% rotating categories + 1% · Cashback Match year 1 | Maximum cashback, SSN required |
| Chase Freedom Student | $0 | 1% on everything | Long-term Chase ecosystem |
The Path Forward: From Student Card to Travel Rewards
The student card is just the beginning. Here’s the progression that works:
- Year 1: BofA Cash Rewards or Deserve EDU — build your first 12 months of US credit history
- Year 2+: Chase Freedom Unlimited ($0 fee, 1.5% everything) — easy approval with 12 months of history
- Year 3+: Chase Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold — now you’re in travel rewards territory
Don’t apply for multiple cards at once. Each application is a hard inquiry. Space them out by 3–6 months, and always pay the full balance every month. The credit score isn’t built by having cards — it’s built by having cards and using them responsibly over time.
